May got away from me. I'm not really surprised that it did, but it's still disappointing. I learned a LOT, however, both about myself and Life in general over the course of the month. I heard from and got to see people that I haven't had contact from in years, plus the comments you guys have left on my entries were great.

Which means I am ready to gather myself up and start moving forward again.

The awesome news is that my Day Job schedule has officially (at least for the next two weeks) been slashed to reasonable working hours. I'm still skeptical about it for the long run, but right now it's greater than it was.

So I'm going to be trying something new today. The suggestion came from [livejournal.com profile] neogeen:

"So maybe a Moart Moment? No obligation to post every day. Instead you can work a little here and there on a post, and then post when it happens. No stress about "it didn't get done today!" but rather "I'll shave out 10 minutes here to add a few sentences save and put it away"."

MOART Moments will just... happen. I still want to stick to some of the guidelines I use for my MOART Month outlines (plus the World-Building Wednesday one I inadvertently stumbled over) but, to save myself the crunch and the headache and the Stress about keeping up an entire month of them, I'm just going to let them happen as they come.

Some might be planned (I'm gathering a collection of Pokémon doodles, also the aformentioned WBW), some might just appear out of the blue as I finish working on something (or I want to show you what I finished RIGHT NOW OMG), but they'll happen.

[+1] )

I'm really excited to start trying to work on things as they come.... especially with my newfound afternoons.

First order of business is to get my workspace spruced back up, but I am aiming to have that done by this weekend. Then next week I can REALLY start working on stuff again.

June really is looking up.

Only took us five months to get here, hey?

Time skip, time skip. I'll make a more formal post about what happened and why later, but for right now, let's try to get back on the wagon about posting some art, hey?

Hey guys,

Day 3 of MOART May will be delayed until 9 or 10pm EST tonight. I forgot I had to leave into work early for my three-month review, so I won’t be able to scrap together a post until I get off of work tonight.

Also it seems while I have a bunch of scanned sketches, I don’t have any of them sized properly! Whoops! So I have a little bit of homework to do tonight as well.

Hope everyone is enjoying themselves and we’ll be back tonight! Same bat time, same bat channel!

It's amazing what a little time and tutorials will do for a picture.

And our first official post for MOART May!

While I can't promise I'll be good on this for the rest of the month, I figure we could kick off MOART May with some "World Building Wednesdays". According to Tumblr, World Building Wednesdays are for, get this, world building! You can ask me any sort of question about any of the worlds I've tinkered with and I'll answer! If I can....

The one flaw in this plan, however, is that you guys barely know any of my characters, much less the worlds they live in!

So today we're gonna fix that. It means today's update is mostly going to be WALL-OF-TEXT Wednesday, but I'll try to see if I can scrounge up some old sketches for you as well.

Let's get started! [+6] )
~*~

And with that, I'm actually pretty pleased with World Building Wednesday. I've got some new ideas about this story now, which I may re-visit next Wednesday. Hmmm yeah, that could be fun. Focus on getting new character sketches done and filling in some of the (gaping) plot holes around this story and try to polish it up into something... less bad.

How's that sound, hm? It would mean Wall-Of-Text Wednesdays, but hey. I think I might do that. I always enjoy reading about other people's worlds... maybe it's high time I start putting some of my own stuff out there.

MOART May?!

May. 1st, 2013 12:40 pm

Alright everyone, time for MOART MAY.

May? Yes, May. This year March was far too hectic for me to even THINK about posting MOART, so instead I picked the other month that started with 'M'. The bonus is that not only is this my birth month, but it's also the month before [livejournal.com profile] artslam. Great excuse to warm-up before jumping into a summer of character and world building, right?

Right.

So once again, we're having a month-long celebration of MOART. For those of you who are new, or maybe just catching this the first time around, here is a brief rundown of what MOART May is and what I plan to do for it this month:

Moart is a word coined by [livejournal.com profile] neogeen and is defined as: more art. Or MOAR ART.

Winter is a very low-art time for me. Holidays mix everything up and while I WANT to do art, circumstances are usually against me during late-fall to early-spring.

In 2011, I decided that instead of trying to do MOART Mondays, I would challenge myself to an entire month of posting art.

Why?

No real discernable reason, other than I wanted to see if I could.

((Seekritly it was because I wanted to try posting for an entire month, as a warm-up for [livejournal.com profile] artslam. I've been wanting to join for years, but I've never had the confidence to work on a single project for an entire month. I figured that I could start by trying to post ANY art for an entire month, then step-up to working on a single project for the summer. I'm still not there yet, but if I keep at this long enough I might be!))

It was very successful (in that I actually managed to follow through with posting for the entire month and didn't just stop posting halfway through), so I tried again in 2012. 2012 was not my best year for MOART. Emotional and external circumstances cut my posting short and while I tried valiantly to make-up lost ground, I did not finish posting for the entire month (or any of the catch-up art that I owed in April).

I had a loose set of guidelines to follow in 2011 as well. I did NOT want them to be hard & fast rules, because that's one of the fastest ways I trip myself up with personal goals. Instead, they were more vague - e.g. - try to do one thing a week, rather than one thing a day. They were still in place for 2012 too, though I upped the ante just a teeny bit as a challenge.

March has already passed, but I refuse to give up. Sometimes you have to learn your limits and make compromises, which is why I'm shooting for continuing this project in May. I heistate to say that the slight change in the rules was what did me in last year, but I am going to keep the changes in mind as I set my personal goals for this year.

So now that you have all that, let's move on to the Guidelines and Goals for MOART May 2013~!

~*~

Personal Guidelines for 2013:

Baselines:
~ Post a minimum of one piece of art every day.
~ One post per week is going to be of "fresh" art (drawn within a day or so of posting).
~ One post per week is going to be a finished piece, which will be uploaded to DevArt/FurAffinity.

I've kept these guidelines since 2011 and I see no reason to change them. Same with the corollaries:

~ I am allowed to use previously uploaded pieces as the "Post every day" art. These are pieces that I've uploaded to Photobucket, but that I haven't gotten around to posting here yet. They're "new", just not freshly-drawn-and-scanned new. (I hope to only use these as filler art for the days where I'm too busy to draw/scan anything).

~ Finished pieces are NOT limited to "just drawings". They may also be school assignments or stuff I've crafted. Finished just means finished - it does not mean a full-blown marker/pencil/ink picture every single time.

Now, because every year is new and different, I am (once again) going to be making some changes to my rules. This time HOPEFULLY not to the detriment of my art postin's.

~ Upload the Finished piece of the week to DA/FA on the update day from the Schedule. (I.e. - Sunday: Personal DA, Tuesday: CDS DA, Thursday: Personal FA) This does NOT mean that the Finished piece will be posted on those days; just that it will be uploaded to the designated site on that day. It may show up as the weekly post on a different day.
~ One post per week is going to be re-doing old art. This can be re-drawing an old picture or expounding on an old idea or concept. It does NOT have to be Finished.

And that's it! I'm removing the whole, "Skip a day, make-up a day" thing because honestly, that is way too much stress for me. I'm already over-worked from my day-job (which I KNOW is going to cause complications this month, but I'm going to try to plan for the "outs" ahead of time), so this year I'm going to be happy if I can just get one post a day up.

~*~

Guidelines for people playing along at home:

~ This is for fun!

~ Pick a goal you want to accomplish. Keep it simple! E.g. - Don't bite off more than you can chew. No, "I'm going to finish a fully-colored and rendered picture every day!" (unless you can, and I salute you if you do)

~ Be realistic about yourself, your personality, work ethic and limits. E.g. - I know I don't have the focus to work on a single idea for an entire month, but I'm prolific enough in my sketching that I can easily post one thing a day.

~ Go easy on yourself the first time. E.g. - In 2011, I didn't set any punishments for myself if I skipped a day of posting. I didn't want that looming over my head as an "Or Else". It only creates more stress and makes you worried about NOT doing art. Don't do it! (unless that's how you motivate yourself, but this is for YOU - see Guideline #3)

~ ANY combination of posting patterns are acceptable!! You don't have to post for the entire month. That's just something that I chose to do. YOU pick your own update days. Wanna do once a week? Great! Want to post for the entire month? Also great! Want to post every other day, except Tuesdays and bank holidays? Go for it!

~*~*~

And there we have it! Another year, a different month and, hopefully, an entire month-long celebration of MOART.

Let's get this party started, shall we?
